Sound Off for Jan. 23

No justice center

Am I missing something? Every day I read in the paper as if the only question is where to put the Hall of Justice. Didn't we, the people of Routt County, vote that we did not want a new justice center? We do not need a new Taj Mahal of Justice. We're tired of the overbearing, overstaffed Routt County legal, judicial and social services system.

Chamber is wrong

It is mind-blowing that the chamber is going to outside vendors for its extreme makeover campaign. There are many talented professionals who can provide design services right here in the Yampa Valley. Even our printers could benefit from this venture. Who would know Routt County more than the people who live here? The chamber might say, "Well, they're not a member." Isn't it the chamber's obligation to promote membership within the community for the community? This really sickens me. The chamber is forgetting who supports it.

Build downtown

It's sad to me to see the determination present to abandon the downtown location of the courthouse. Please remember that this is a county facility and more input should be gathered from the whole county in regards to the matter. There are already telephone hearings from the jail, so there is no need for proximity to the jail for convenience. The Old Town businesses feed lunches to all of the lawyers, workers and the public who go down for trial, and it seems like the lawyers who already have offices near the courthouse would be inconvenienced. Now, people can just walk a few blocks. A couple of ideas for saving the courthouse are: Moving the main level of the courthouse and putting two new courtrooms in the main level, using a modern parking garage, there are many architects who are blending old styles with new.

Why against URA?

Just wondering why, when the community came together to support the URA, did three council members vote against it?

Dog 'presents' unwanted

The filthy little secret of West End Village. There are little dog "presents" left behind every single day on my land. I've actually confronted neighbors about this, and they say "My dog would never do that." Well, it is happening. All my neighbors think that I'm kind of a pain, but look around: There are little presents everywhere. The people of Steamboat need to look after their dogs and take better care of them, not just let them out unsupervised.

Congrats, City Council

I would like to thank Paul Strong and the three other City Council members who voted yes on the URA. It shows their vision to the future and their commitment to Steamboat's working class, the majority of which depends on tourism to pay the bills.
