Horner named student of month for December
The Lowell Whiteman School junior Alex Horner was named the Steamboat Springs Rotary Club's student of the month for December.
Horner, the son of Steamboat residents Sandi and Sandy Horner, has consistently earned A's in courses generally more demanding than those typically taken by students his age, such as calculus, Spanish 4 and advanced placement environmental science. Horner is intelligent, outspoken, disciplined and confident.
An avid skier, backpacker and climber, Horner summitted a series of 14,000-foot peaks on school camping trips. He also participated in the school's Desert Week trip, which was dedicated to first aid training and certification.
Horner has a deep commitment to helping others. He maintains a mountain bike trail designed by his parents and open to the public. He has volunteered with Ride the Rockies and the Salvation Army. While in Costa Rica, Horner performed five days of community service to help establish a community garden, teach English and build a greenhouse. While in Bhutan, he helped build mud homes and worked on a farm.
