The members of the Steamboat Springs High School ski team dominated Saturday's five-kilometer classic race at the Spring Gulch Nordic trail system in Carbondale.
Sailor Marty Smith topped the boys' field, and teammate Korie Steitz won the girls' event in the classic-style race held on the rolling hills near Aspen.
Smith won Saturday's race in a time of 18 minutes, 47.5 seconds. Brandon Cooper took second with a time of 19:03.8, and Summit's Kevin Soller was third with a time of 19:37.8. Steamboat's Paul Rose was eighth in 20:04.2, Mike Gleason was 11th in 20:27.4, and Kyle Steitz was 17th in 22:03.1.
Korie Steitz followed Smith's lead, winning the girls' race in a time of 21:51.9. Brittany Perkins was second at 21:56.3.
Steamboat's Sarah MacCarthy was third with a time of 22:10.8, and teammate Melissa Krause was seventh with a time of 24:10.1.
Coach Smith said some last-minute wax changes may have helped the girls in the race but probably didn't change the winners.
"It was pretty cold when we started, but it warmed up in the afternoon," coach Barry Smith said. "We were pretty worried about the wax and made a few last-minute adjustments that gave the girls a little more kick."
Other top Steamboat finishers in the race included Michelle Lichtenfels in 36th at 29:11.7, Anna Marie Anderson in 46th at 30:25.8 and Leigh Smith in 47th at 30:25.9.
Coach Smith said the top Steamboat finishes came at a good time and that he is hoping it will give the Sailors skiers some motivation as they head into the final stretch of the season.
