Muhme, Culver place in Paonia

Randy Muhme and Robert Culver placed second and third, respectively, at the Paonia wrestling tournament Saturday.

Muhme placed second at heavyweight, and Culver, a sophomore in his first year of high school wrestling, was third at 215 pounds at the 17-team tournament.

"He's winning on strength," Tigers assistant Leif Jacobsen said of Culver. "But he's learning moves and using them, which is helping in accordance with the strength."

Culver is following in the footsteps of Muhme, who went out for high school wrestling for the first time last season and made the state tournament.

Muhme and Culver were the only two Hayden wrestlers to place in Paonia, but the Tigers took 16 athletes to the tournament. Several competed at the same weight.

Jacobsen said the coaching staff is allowing those in the same weight class to challenge each other.

"We're trying to let them wrestle where they want to," Jacobsen said.

In addition to Muhme and Culver, the following Hayden wrestlers traveled to Paonia: Zed Wheelock (103), Jeff Dunn and Matt Holden (112), Dusty Jones (119), Josh Peay (125), David Blair (130), Tyler Manzanares (135), Chris DeBowes and Ray Curtis (140), Sean Rolando (145), Isaac Haskins (152), Aaron Haskins, Andrew Birch and Jesse Drennan (171).

On Tuesday, Hayden hosted a dual against Grand Valley. The number of wrestlers both teams have out this season allowed for 10 matches to be staged. The only Tiger wrestler to win his match was Isaac Haskins at 160 pounds.

Hayden's next tournament is the Western Slope League tournament all day Saturday at Soroco High School in Oak Creek.
