Avalanche kills backcountry skier

A 26-year-old Steamboat Springs man died Monday in an avalanche on Soda Mountain.

The man was backcountry skiing with friends when the incident occurred. The friends were waiting on snowmobiles at the bottom of the run when the avalanche was triggered. The man was wearing an avalanche beacon and his friends were able to find him and dig him out. The friends administered CPR; however, they were unable to save the man. He was dead when rescuers arrived on scene, the Routt County Sheriff's Office said.

Soda Mountain is northeast of Steamboat Springs on the edge of the Mount Zirkel Wilderness area. The mountain is just north of Buffalo Pass and Routt County Road 38.

No one else was injured in the avalanche. The Sheriff's Office is investigating the accident.
