Kassemi receives AFA nomination
Simon Kassemi of Steamboat Springs recently received an Air Force Academy nomination from Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell. Kassemi, a senior at the New Mexico Military Institute, also received three additional nominations to the Air Force Academy, the Naval Academy and West Point Military Academy. Kassemi is the son of Rebecca and Mical Huyser of Steamboat and Dr. Si Kassemi of New Mexico.
Parnell named teen of the month for December
Steamboat Springs High School senior Kelli Parnell recently was named the Optimist Club's December teen of the month.
Kelli is a varsity member of the school's tennis, soccer, track and cross-country teams. She dances, is a member of the National Honor Society and the Suicide Prevention Team, is a Link Crew leader at the school and has received numerous academic awards. Those awards include being named the outstanding student in Spanish, math, physics, biology and American history/ American literature during her sophomore year. As a junior, Kelli received athletics letters for her participation in cross country, track and tennis.
In the community, Kelli volunteers at Humble Ranch, where she is a hippotherapy side-walker, teaches Sunday school and Vacation Bible School and taught a PowerPoint class to fifth- and sixth-graders at Christian Heritage School. She has worked at Old West Steak House, the Christie Club and as a piano teacher.
Kelli's hobbies include playing soccer and tennis, running, playing piano and dancing. Her future goals include becoming a high school history/social studies teacher and teaching underprivileged children in Africa.
Kelli said setting goals has allowed her to maintain great grades while still being actively involved in sports and the community.
