Triathletes Joy Rasmussen and Bill Goldsmith's vision of a local event has become a reality with the creation of a triathlon to be held this summer at Lake Catamount.
"I have traveled all over the United States for years, competing in some of the largest and most famous events," said Rasmussen, a Steamboat Springs resident and USA Triathlon regional board member. "I can think of no more beautiful place for a triathlon than Steamboat Springs in the late summer."
The Steamboat Springs Triathlon is scheduled for Aug. 28 and will include a three-quarter-mile swim, a 20-mile bike ride and a four-mile run in the Lake Catamount area.
Boulder's 5430 Sports, which produces a number of triathlons and multi-sport events, is helping stage the race with the support of the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association.
"The level of excitement and support I have seen so far in Steamboat is very encouraging," said Barry Siff of 5430 Sports. "I also have heard a very positive reaction from many Front Range triathletes."
Siff co-produced the Salomon Winter Adventure Race held at Howelsen Hill in 2001, so he is familiar with the area.
"We're still working on the course and waiting to get up there and do some riding," Siff said. "I've been up looking at the roads."
Organizers chose the distance, which is between the standard sprint and Olympic distances, to give people plenty of time to train as the snow starts to melt in April and May.
"It's a great distance for your first triathlon but long enough for seasoned athletes to train to perform well," Siff said.
If people keep up their aerobic base through the winter, they should encounter little trouble preparing during the summer. Finding a place to run and cycle is the easy part in Colorado.
"It's the swimming that's the biggest challenge," Siff said.
