Steamboat's Smith wins state Nordic title

Steamboat Springs Nordic skier Marty Smith picked up the team's second state title in as many days, winning the boys' classic cross-country ski race Saturday in Summit County.

Teammate Mike Gleason won the freestyle race Friday.

Smith finished the five-kilometer course in 15 minutes, 45.3 seconds. Aspen's Brandon Cooper was second in 15:54.9.

The snowy conditions made waxing difficult, but Smith suspected Aspen had the best wax based on Cooper's strategy.

"Brandon had to stand up when he was behind me," Smith said. "There were two tracks throughout the whole course. I switched lanes and wanted him to pass me, and he never did. There was a last little hill, and I beat him on the downhill and then stayed ahead to the end."
