Three local contractors and a pair of Denver firms that specialize in building golf courses and clubhouses are among five contractors prequalified to bid on the new clubhouse at Haymaker Golf Course.
The city of Steamboat Springs has announced it will open bids for the project March 7. The clubhouse, with an estimated price tag of $4 million, is due to be completed in April 2006.
"We're excited that we got the number of contractors qualified that we did," city Director of Parks, Open Space and Recreational Services Chris Wilson said. "It means we'll have a more competitive bidding process. You couldn't go wrong with any of the firms on the list."
Among the Steamboat firms that are prequalified are Fox Construction Inc. and TCD. Fort Collins-based Drahota Inc., with offices in Steamboat, is also in the mix.
Centerre Construction of Greenwod Village has expressed interest in the project. Centerre built a new 30,000-square-foot clubhouse for Cherry Creek Country Club. That building includes five dining rooms and a two-story clock tower.
Weitz Golf International, based in Florida with offices in Denver, is the other specialist that has shown interest in Haymaker's new clubhouse. Weitz has built golf courses and clubhouses in Florida. Its newest project is the Macao Beach Resort golf course in the Dominican Republic.
After opening bids March 7, the city will take some time to verify numbers in the documents and resolve any outstanding issues, Wilson said. Other factors in addition to cost will be weighed in choosing the contractor.
If weather permits, construction could begin as soon as April 1. The bid documents allow 365 days for completion of the project, barring unavoidable weather delays.
The city-owned Haymaker opened seven years ago as a combination municipal and resort course. Construction was funded with revenue from the city's 1 percent lodging tax. Haymaker since has operated with a 2,800-square-foot temporary clubhouse. Late last year, the city approved plans to build the new clubhouse. The city will finance construction of the clubhouse by issuing bonds backed by the lodging tax.
The city's invitation for bids describes a nearly 13,000-square-foot building that would have a single story over a basement. The basement will have a ramped entrance allowing golf cart storage.
Exterior materials will include heavy timbers, wood and manufactured stone.
