For several Hayden High School students, playing in the school's concert band isn't just an obligation, it's something they enjoy, and it shows in their performance, middle and high school band director Don Cherni said.
That's why the students -- Becky Rosendale, Amber Suits, Janna Hoza and Hannah Williams -- have been chosen to participate in the Festival of Winds, a high school honor band event Friday and Saturday at the University of Wyoming in Laramie.
"I nominated them on their past experience in honor bands and their performance in class," Cherni said. "They are my top students."
Rosendale and Suits -- both sophomores -- play the flute. Hoza, a freshman, plays the clarinet; Williams, a senior, plays the baritone saxophone.
The University of Wyoming sponsors the festival, which serves as a recruitment tool for the school's music band. The Hayden students will join high school band students from five states to learn from university music faculty and rehearsing with other high-performing high schools students.
The school's symphonic band will perform for the students when they arrive Friday. The students will perform a concert Saturday night.
"They are going to meet a lot of people they didn't know before and play music we can't play in a small group setting," Cherni said.
The Hayden students also have participated in honor bands in Aspen and Grand Junction this school year.
