The weekend's two road wins weren't pretty, but Steamboat Springs girls basketball coach Ashley Berggren said the team will take them.
The Sailors increased their win streak to four straight by defeating Palisade, 53-45, on Friday and Delta, 75-49, on Saturday.
The Sailors are 10-10 overall, moving to .500 for the first time this season. Steamboat improved to 8-4 in the Western Slope League and remains in a tie with Eagle Valley for third place behind champion Moffat County and second-place Rifle.
The lock at third makes this weekend's games against Battle Mountain and Eagle Valley more important for the Sailors.
"It would be great for (postseason) seeding purposes," Berggren said. "This weekend is crucial."
Steamboat began the weekend with an eight-point win in a physical game at Palisade. Berggren said the game wasn't as close as the score indicated.
"There's wasn't a time in which I was too concerned," she said. "It was just a matter of getting that game out of the way."
Senior Kayla Kostur led Steamboat with 20 points. Junior Tara King added nine.
Much like Steamboat's first blowout win against Delta on Jan. 15, Saturday's wasn't close.
"I had the second string in during the second half," Berggren said. "(Sophomore) Erin Gleason had 10 points. She came in and played well. (Senior) Katie Darlington came in and had a couple baskets, as well."
Steamboat swept both games against Delta and Palisade this year. The Sailors will look for the season sweep against Battle Mountain at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Minturn and a season split against Eagle Valley at 5 p.m. Saturday in Gypsum.
After beginning the season 2-7 overall, Steamboat has gone an impressive 8-3 in its past 11 games.
"Thinking about where we had started and how far they've come in such a short time, they've really responded positively and taken on the challenge of improving," Berggren said. "They are learning how to work with one another and have more confidence in each other and their own abilities."
