I am writing in response to the article by Brent Boyer on the School Board discussion about the Dance Showcase, which appeared in your Feb. 9 issue.
Brent does a commendable job of accurately reporting on school issues for your paper, but I felt that this particular article did not tell the whole story. As a School Board member quoted in the article, I feel a need to clarify those comments.
The subject of the Dance Showcase came up that evening as a result of community concerns expressed to board members Pat Gleason and myself, and my comments came as an expression of feedback I received from those members of the community. This is part of our job as elected representatives. As I did not attend the performance this year, I cannot comment directly on the content of this year's show. My family and I have attended several of these performances in past years, and have always been impressed by the level of talent. I am satisfied with the response of Principal Dave Schmid that there is a review process for the content of the show, and the concerns we relayed will be considered for future productions.
But the article omitted the board discussion and my comments of praise for the dedication and hard work of the students to produce this student-run dance performance. Although some may disagree with the flavor of some aspects of the dance pieces, we still need to recognize that this show is the culmination of months of hard work and effort by a large group of our high school students. A special round of applause for organizers Danielle Tredway, Brittany DeGroff and Rebecca Peterson. They deserve our recognition for a job well done.
