Youth hockey teams play well

Peewee B: Steamboat's Peewee B team traveled to Summit County last weekend to take on the Summit Lightning. The first game was a goaltending clinic put on by Steamboat's Joey Haight and Summit's Philip Contos. Contos turned away 27 of the 29 shots he faced in goal. Steamboat was able to capitalize on goals by Charlie VonThaden and Lance Ostrom. Landen Mertz assisted on Ostrom's goal. Haight posted a shutout, stopping all 15 shots that he faced.

The second game featured another strong showing by Haight turning away 18 of the 19 shots Summit sent his way. Steamboat went on to a dominating 7-1 victory. Grant McCannon opened the scoring with an assist from VonThaden, who also added two goals. Skyler Martin had a two goal effort, and Landen Mertz and Lance Ostrom each had one goal.

Mite Explorer: Steamboat's Mite Explorer Blue team was invited to Craig to participate in a mini-jamboree. Coach Tim Selby was particularly proud of his defense, which helped the goalie tandem of Ryan Walker and Joe Deline hold Craig scoreless in all three games.

Steamboat's Mite Explorer Gold team traveled to Kremmling for two games. Will Firestone shut out the hosts, and Joseph Borgerding, Jordan Gorr and Bryce Sullivan netted hat tricks in the first game. The second game saw Steamboat play well again as Cash Globe limited Kremmling to one goal. Scoring was paced by Gorr's five goals.

The Explorer Blue and Explorer Gold play each other at 7:45 a.m. today at Howelsen Ice Arena.

Also scheduled for this weekend are the Girls U-19 team at Colorado Springs; Midget Major C at Oak Creek; Midget Minor A travels to Regis; Bantam A hosts Pueblo; Peewee A hosts Pueblo today and travels to Providence on Sunday; the Peewee B1 team hosts Vail today and Providence on Sunday; the Squirt B team hosts Aspen today; and the Squirt C team travels to Craig on Sunday.
