Team Volant and Mini Team Volant, Steamboat Springs' synchronized skate teams, fared well at the Pacific Coast Regional Championships on Jan. 28.

Team Volant won first place in the Junior Classic category. The team leaves today for Beaver Dam, Wis., where it will compete against many of the nation's top teams. Team Volant has been together for four years and is composed mainly of high school-age skaters.

Mini Team Volant is in its first year, and the regional championships in Fort Collins was the first competition for the new team. It placed second in the youth introductory class. Mini Team Volant is made up of girls ages 5 to 11.

The idea is for the members of Mini Team Volant to move up and skate at a more senior level eventually, said Kim Haggarty, a figure skating coach at Howelsen Ice Arena.

Courtney Gill is the coach of both synchronized skate teams.

"We've got close to 35 new skaters in our Intro to Figure Skating class," Haggarty said. "They wanted to have their own team. They like the social aspect. It's just fun trying to be able to perform together."

Team Volant is skating a four-minute program choreographed to a mix of Shania Twain songs. Mini Team Volant, which plans to perform in Steamboat in April, skated to "Home on the Range."

The costumes were designed by Gill and made with the help of parents, particularly Roma Richardson who sewed all the Team Volant costumes.

Members of Team Volant are: Mackenzie Frank, Jessie Cannon, Allison Lewis, Kelly Ascher, Kelsey Comeau, Jenny Spencer, Jamie Jones, Lauren Ventrudo, Rachel Ivancie, Elise Krueger, Carly Earp, Alex Morrison, Carlee McLaughlin and Sabra Severinghaus.

Members of Mini Team Volant are Hanna Haggarty, Kayla Haggarty, Dominique Katthain, Malia Fraoli, Clare Franklin, Sara Pugh, Ellie Bender, Molly Parsons, Ellese Lupori, Samantha Cretney and Amy Flavell.
