Two injured in rollover accident on U.S. 40
Two people were injured after their vehicle rolled off the road on U.S. Highway 40 near milepost 119.
At about 2 p.m. Monday, Fernando Padilla Hernandez, 21, of Steamboat Springs, was going around a sweeping left-hand curve and lost control of his vehicle, a green 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
The vehicle spun off the right side of the road, hitting an uphill embankment before rolling onto its roof, according to the State Patrol.
The driver and his passenger, 29-year-old Yasenia Hadley, were taken via ambulance to Yampa Valley Medical Center, where they were treated and released.
During its investigation, the State Patrol found the tires on the vehicle to have insufficient tread depth and to be unsafe. At the time of the accident, the road was slushy and covered in snow, according to the State Patrol.
Hernandez was cited for careless driving and operating a vehicle with unsafe tires. The accident reduced U.S. 40 to one lane for almost an hour.
