Soroco wrestlers in semifinals

The Soroco wrestling team took four wrestlers to the Class 2A Region 1 tournament in Palisade. Three have worked their way to the semifinals, inching that much closer to a berth into the 2005 Colorado State Wrestling Championships field.

Joel Schlegal (103 pounds), Levi Gonzales (112) and Matt Iacovetto (152) won their opening-round matches and received byes into the semifinals. Shaye Bruggink, Soroco's fourth wrestler, lost a match Friday at 160 pounds but is still alive in the consolation bracket.

"We looked good," Rams coach Doug Gates said. "They wrestled really well. Shaye will wrestle back (today). He's still got a good shot. It's a little tougher."

Schlegal, Gonzales and Iacovetto pinned their opponents, and Bruggink was on his way to pinning his opponent when he got flipped to his back.

"He should have beat the kid," Gates said. "He was beating the guy and made a mistake and got pinned."

The second day of wrestling resumes at 9 a.m. today at Palisade High School with the consolation rounds. The championships aren't until 4 p.m. Hayden also is at the Class 2A Region 1 tournament, but results from the Tigers' opening-day matches weren't available at press time.
