Men injured in head-on crash remain in hospitals

Two men injured in a head-on collision on U.S. Highway 40 last week remained in hospitals Wednesday.

Jerome Gerald Velasquez, 34, of Idaho Springs, was in fair condition at Yampa Valley Medical Center on Wednesday, hospital spokeswoman Mindy Fontaine said.

According to police reports, Velasquez, who was westbound on U.S. 40, moved into the oncoming lane of traffic while apparently attempting to pass a dump truck and struck a vehicle driven by 26-year-old Jacob Nathanael Martinez of Craig.

Martinez was taken to Denver Health Medical Center, where he was listed in serious condition Wednesday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The accident happened at about 10:30 a.m. Thursday about four miles west of Steamboat Springs. Both men had to be extricated from their vehicles.

The Colorado State Patrol has been investigating the accident and hopes to make a decision regarding charges by the end of the week, Trooper Brett Hilling said.

Open auditions today for Pirate Theater, Television

Steamboat Springs alumni invited to join association

Alumni of Steamboat Springs High School are invited to join the school's alumni association by calling Gail Dudley at 871-3641. The association has a Web page and a mailing list to help people find classmates and friends. The group also is putting out a newsletter in March, so people interested in receiving it should call soon to join.

Steamboat Medical Group has flu vaccine available

Flu vaccine is still available at Steamboat Medical Group for those at high risk or anyone who would like a flu vaccine. Steamboat Medical has reallocated several doses of flu vaccine to the Denver area and our local Visiting Nurse Association and still has plenty available. It is recommended that children ages 6 months to 23 months and their family members receive flu vaccine. Call 879-0203.

Arts council seeks people to volunteer as docents

The Steamboat Springs Arts Council is looking for people to volunteer for its docent program. Volunteers will receive a 12-class course of instruction beginning mid-February. Docents are trained volunteers who help to interpret and explain exhibitions to visitors. After training, docents are expected to commit to 10 to 12 hours monthly.
