Mike Forney: Consider fairness

The recent actions by five members of our new City Council are terribly mean-spirited, petty and embarrassing for our community.

For the recently elected council majority to plot and execute the forced removal of our retiring city manager in the dead of night is a disgrace to good government and sound personnel management practice. Particularly disappointing, however, are the actions of our newest council members, Towny Anderson and Kevin Kaminski, whose recent campaigns emphasized the fairness and integrity they promised to bring to city government.

How should our elected officials practice their stewardship of this wonderful community? As a member of the International Rotary organization, I've long felt that its credo, developed many years ago, provides an excellent standard to measure one's actions. "The Four Way Test" asks: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Our community would be served better in the future if Susan Dellinger, Towny Anderson, Ken Brenner, Steve Ivancie and Kevin Kaminski considered these principles as they carry out their civic responsibilities.
