Worried about holiday pounds? Looking for a fun family activity? Interested in taking a day off from skiing or riding?
Howelsen Ice Arena has public skate and family drop-in hockey times for the holiday season. From today through New Year's Day, Howelsen Ice Arena is open for business.
The ice arena is open limited hours today because of the holiday, but it has expanded drop-in hockey and public skate times scheduled Monday through Friday, including a Women's and Mother-and-Daughter drop-in skating session from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Friday.
Howelsen Ice Arena is an indoor facility with restrooms, locker rooms, full rental capabilities and an Olympic-size sheet of ice.
Youth and adult hockey are popular in Steamboat, but the teams are practicing on a limited basis during the holiday season, freeing up ice time for the public.
Public skate rates are $6 for adults, $5 for youth from ages 6 to 17. Children 5 and younger are free. Senior citizens (older than 50) are $3. Howelsen Ice Arena also offers a group rate of $3 a person for parties of 10 or more. There is at least one public skate session every day from today through Jan. 1. There are two public skate sessions on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.
Skate rentals are $2 for groups and seniors and $3 for everyone else.
Drop-in hockey costs $9.50 for adults and $8.50 for youth. Punch cards, which give a patron 10 public skate times, are $50 for adults and $40 for youth. Drop-in hockey punch cards are $85 for adults. A figure or hockey skate rental punch card is $25.
This holiday season includes another offering. The Steamboat Springs Figure Skating Club is presenting the Polar Express Ice Show at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings at Howelsen Ice Arena.
The club holds an annual holiday show with different themes. This year, organizers adapted the popular children's book and movie into an ice show. The cost is $5 each night, and tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance at the ice arena or at Celebrations on the west end of town.
The club will be selling baked goods, candy flower arrangements and beanies each night.

Howelsen Ice Arena is at 285 Howelsen Parkway near Howelsen Hill in downtown Steamboat.
