Chris Diamond: Sorry Hughes

On Tuesday night, the City Council voted 5-2 to terminate City Manager Paul Hughes effective Dec. 31. This decision had nothing to do with the performance or effectiveness of our city manager. He already had resigned and agreed to continue working until a new manager was found.

What a way to treat a key employee who had committed seven-plus years to Steamboat. No one who had ever worked with Paul could fault his professionalism, his job knowledge or his passion for Steamboat.

For the council to conduct Tuesday's public execution shows an extreme lack of respect, which I find inconsistent with the core values of this community. Regardless of whether you liked our city manager, he deserved better treatment.

I can't imagine how demoralizing this must have been to his staff.

By way of this letter, I would like to apologize to Paul for the way he was treated and say thank you for trying to make Steamboat a better community.
