As so many members of our community have affirmed to me since his unnecessary and abrupt termination Tuesday, Paul is a man of integrity, ethics, honesty, kindness, industriousness and humor. Perhaps the five members of City Council who decided it was better for the community not to permit Paul to retire quietly, as he announced last month, should take a lesson. The comments I have heard from everyone regarding their treatment of Paul include such adjectives as "shameful," "disgusting," "deplorable," "indecent" and "appalling."

Natalie Cowan: Political hackery
I, along with many of my fellow residents, am appalled at the City Council's recent action to terminate Paul Hughes as city manager. It reeks of political hackery and arrogance. Shame on you. Wait until the next election comes around; your low behavior will not be forgotten.
Chris Diamond: Sorry Hughes
On Tuesday night, the City Council voted 5-2 to terminate City Manager Paul Hughes effective Dec. 31. This decision had nothing to do with the performance or effectiveness of our city manager. He already had resigned and agreed to continue working until a new manager was found.
Bobbi Hodge: Good decision
City Manager Paul Hughes made the decision to retire Nov. 3, just after Election Day. He said, "It just seemed like a good time, especially with a new council getting seated, to be moving on to something else." On Tuesday night, a strong majority of the council agreed with only three members in the audience, myself included.
