Steamboat Springs The Chix with Stix hockey team came up short in two women's hockey games against the Denver Cliffhangers at Howelsen Ice Arena last weekend.
Denver and Steamboat skated to a scoreless first period in their game Saturday. The Chix broke the tie on a goal off the stick of Holly Curtiss four minutes into the second period. She flipped the puck over the shoulder of the Cliffhangers' goalie. Steamboat's Riley Polumbus and Lisa Owen were credited with assists.
Denver did all its offensive damage in a 2-minute, 30-second scoring spree late in the third period, and it was enough to give the Cliffhangers a 2-1 lead.
The Chix pulled goalie Kit Rice to try to tie the game with help from an extra skater. The Cliffhangers took advantage and scored an empty netter with 40 seconds left to win, 3-1.
Denver and Steamboat played again at 7:30 a.m. Sunday. The Cliffhangers got on the scoreboard first, netting a goal with 2:50 left in the opening period.
Neither team scored in the second period, and Denver added to its one-goal lead with another score in the closing minutes of the game.
Center Sue Heineke took a penalty shot for the Chix late in Sunday's game, but Denver's goalie turned it away. Steamboat pulled goalie Nikki Knoebel in an effort to get on the board. The Chix were unable to score and dropped the contest, 2-0.
The losses drop Steamboat, which is coached by Tim Shor--land and Greg Sklaney, to 2-5-0 overall and 2-4-0 in Women's Association of Colorado Hockey B1 league play.
Steamboat doesn't have another game until it hosts the Colorado Springs Silverwolves on Jan. 7 and 8 at Howelsen Ice Arena.
