City hosts free holiday party

— Free food for you, time with Santa for the kids and tubing for all.

Tonight, about 250 people are expected to gather for a free community party, put together by Steamboat Springs' parks, recreation and open space department officials.

"Everyone in the community is welcome just to get in the holiday spirit," said Brooke Lightner, recreation coordinator for the city. "It is a city party for the community."

The party, which will be at Howelsen Hill Lodge, will include hot cocoa, cider and cookies, along with caroling and a Nativity scene.

Children can sit down with Santa and share their wish lists, Lightner said. Recreation staff will be on hand to take photos for families to take home of the children with the jolly man.

People also will be able to tube down Howelsen Hill. The city will provide a limited number of tubes, so families are encouraged to bring their own.

No sleds or metal runners will be allowed on the hill because of safety reasons, Lightner said.
