It was an up-and-down weekend for the Soroco girls basketball team.
Friday's 55-45 defeat of Vail Christian was an early-season highlight for the Rams.
"The girls played very, very well," Soroco coach Danelle Rivera said. "We pulled ahead at the end of the first quarter. We kept inching our way ahead. The gap widened out at the end of the third quarter."
Soroco defeated Vail Chris--tian last year, as well, and will play the Saints again in Edwards on Feb. 7.
Rivera estimated Soroco shot 46 percent from the floor down the stretch. The Saints played a zone, daring the Rams to beat them from the perimeter, which Soroco did.
"The girls must have given it their all on Friday," Rivera said, adding that the team did not play as well in Saturday's 33-19 loss to Coal Ridge in New Castle.
"That night, whether that be playing two games in 24 hours or being away from our home venue, we weren't able to do much of anything. We learned a lot of good lessons out of that. As a team, I think they grew."
The Rams have four more weekends during which they play back-to-back games, in----cluding Jan. 27 and 28 home games against Hayden and Paonia.
Up next for Soroco (2-3 overall) is a 5:30 p.m. game Friday against North Park in Walden. It is the final game before winter break. The Rams' first game after the break is at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 6 in Rangely.
