Sailors open season with split

Steamboat Springs The Steamboat Springs High School girls basketball team split its two games at the season-opening Roaring Fork Tournament in Carbondale during the weekend.
Longmont beat Steamboat on Friday, but Steamboat rallied to defeat Western Slope League opponent Battle Mountain, 29-25, on Saturday. The game between the Sailors and Huskies did not count in league standings.
"Longmont was really solid," Sailors coach Ashley Berggren said. "I imagine they shot 65 percent from the perimeter."
In the Battle Mountain game, Steamboat was trailing at the half before coming from behind to win.
"At halftime, the girls really seemed to step up, and players took on more of a leadership role," Berggren said. "(Seniors) Liz Johnson and Jess Peters stepped up and were able to put the ball in the basket."
The Sailors host the Steam--boat Shootout tournament beginning at 8:15 p.m. today against Basalt. The team has not focused its practice time on any specific areas, Berggren said.
"There is so much we are still working on," she said. "Mostly, I want the girls to know each member plays a vital role to this team. I need players to step up and be a scorer. We need to fill that scoring hole. It doesn't have to be one player."
