Cyclists try for pass record

In place of its usual Wednesday criterium training at Moots Cycles, the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club road team looked toward Rabbit Ears Pass.

And its record.

According to coach Tom Davis, the fastest anyone has pedaled from the base of the pass near Routt County Road 20 to the west summit is 33 minutes, 6 seconds. The 28 cyclists gathered at the base Aug. 10 sought to break that record.

No one did, but Barkley Robinson came close, riding the course in 34:06.

"It was a training time trial (for the club)," Davis said.

Davis gave away some prizes but didn't publicize the event because it wasn't an official race. Many of the top cyclists in town -- and those who frequently race -- showed up to take part.

"We had all different age categories represented," Davis said.
