A Craig man was extradited to Routt County on Wednesday on charges of attempted first-degree murder.
Gordon J. Huckins, 42, allegedly choked his 33-year-old wife until she passed out during a camping trip July 29, Routt County Undersheriff Dan Taylor said.
Huckins was working in Carbon County, Wyo., when he was arrested by the Carbon County Sheriff's Office and extradited to Routt County, where the crime allegedly occurred.
Taylor said Huckins and his wife were camping on Routt County Road 38 near the Dry Lake Campground when Huckins reportedly got into an argument with his wife about collecting firewood.
Huckins became enraged and allegedly threw a cooler at his wife before grabbing her, pinning her down on top of a picnic table and choking her until she lost consciousness.
Taylor said his wife eventually regained consciousness. She did not immediately report the incident to authorities.
The initial report of the incident was made to the Craig Police Department, and after discussing who had jurisdiction in the case, the Craig Police Department decided to let the Routt County Sheriff's Office investigate and pursue the incident.
Taylor said Huckins' wife originally thought the incident occurred in the Routt National Forest near Strawberry Park but that when the officers took her to the site, she could not identify where they had been.
After Huckins was arrested, he was sent to Routt County Jail, where he is being held on $50,000 bond. He will appear in court at
1 p.m. Wednesday.
