An Arvada man died Saturday afternoon from injuries he sustained in an all-terrain vehicle accident south of Steamboat Springs.
Edward Martin Schwegman, 54, was pronounced dead at about 6:15 p.m. from head injuries he sustained after the four-wheeler he was driving hit a tree, Routt County Coroner Robert Ryg said.
Ryg said the man was driving the four-wheeler back to his family's campsite when the accident happened. Schwegman's son, Jed, was riding another four-wheeler and turned to see that his father had struck a tree.
Jed Schwegman was within yelling distance of the family's camper and called for help. His mother, Kathy, heard Jed yelling and called 911. The call was received at 5:39 p.m.
The accident took place in a wooded area off Routt County Road 14 on Jack Creek Road, about one mile south of Stagecoach Reservoir, where the family owned property, Ryg said.
Ryg said Schwegman died instantly from the injuries he sustained. It appeared that he lost control of the ATV. It was not immediately clear whether he was wearing a helmet.
Ryg said that Schwegman's family was meeting with counselors Saturday evening and that they planned to stay at the campsite Saturday night.
