Practice starts Monday

Athletes reminded to have forms completed


The first day of school at Steamboat Springs High School isn't until Aug. 29, but fall sports begin Monday.

The lone exception is boys golf, which is under way.

Before student-athletes can practice, they must have a completed physical form on file at the high school office. Student-athletes also must have proof of insurance and an athletics policy agreement form signed by a parent and the student-athlete.

Football practice begins at 8:30 a.m. Monday with testing at the high school football field. Equipment check-out is at 10:30 a.m., and a team meeting is at 3 p.m. Practice begins at 4 p.m., and special teams will practice at 7:30 p.m. Two-a-day practices begin Tuesday and start at 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The Sailors open the season at 1 p.m. Aug. 27 on the road against Aurora Central.

Sophomores, juniors and seniors interested in playing volleyball will meet at 8:30 a.m. Monday at the high school. The same group will practice at 2:30 p.m. Freshmen will practice at 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. There will be no practice Tuesday, but they will resume at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday for sophomores, juniors and seniors and at 9:30 a.m. for freshmen. The volleyball season opens at 1 p.m. Sept. 3 in Steamboat against Greeley Central.

Boys soccer opens its season at 9 a.m. Monday with a meeting and fitness testing at the high school. Practice is at 4 p.m. at Emerald Park. From Tuesday through Friday, practice is at 8 a.m. at the high school. On Saturday, practice is at 8:30 a.m. at Emerald Park. Steamboat's boys soccer team opens its season at 10 a.m. Sept. 3 at Mountain View.

The girls and boys cross-country teams have their opening meeting and practice at 5:30 p.m. Monday in front of the high school. Practices will remain at 5:30 p.m. through Friday but will be at 9 a.m. Saturday. The cross-country team begins its season Sept. 3 in Delta.

Steamboat's boys tennis team starts its season at 5 p.m. Monday at The Tennis Center in Steamboat Springs. A parent meeting will follow at 6:30 p.m. Practices for the remainder of the week and through the week of Aug. 22 are at 12:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays and at 9 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. The tennis team starts early this year, with home matches against Hotchkiss and Cedaredge at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively, Aug. 27 at the Tennis Center.

Steamboat's newest program, softball, begins its second season at 9 a.m. Thursday at Steamboat Springs Middle School. Practice will be at the same time Friday. During the week of Aug. 22, practices will run from 9 to 11 a.m. The softball team doesn't open its season until Sept. 2 in Middle Park.

An organizational meeting for the dance team is at 4 p.m. Monday at Studio II in the Human Services Building on Seventh Street. A dance schedule for the season will be set at that meeting.

Cheerleading practice begins at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the high school commons area. Practice will be at the same time Thursday. During the week of Aug. 22, cheerleaders will meet at 9 a.m. in the weight room and again at 6 p.m. in the high school gym.
