Airport manager search continues

After interviewing four candidates, Routt County is continuing its search for a manager for Yampa Valley Regional Airport.

On Monday, Routt County Manager Tom Sullivan said the candidate who was offered the job of overseeing operations at YVRA declined the position. County officials then decided to again review the 50 or so applications they have received.

"We want to make sure we don't miss anyone. It really is tough to figure out a good match for the position. We have the opportunity to call a few more people and get a good fit for YVRA," Sullivan said.

Routt County Commissioner Nancy Stahoviak, who spent part of last weekend reviewing the applications, said some applicants are from Colorado, which would make the interviewing process easier.

"All the people have some airport management experience. It is just a matter of really feeling if the person will fit into the airport," Stahoviak said.

The interview committee initially conducted phone interviews with nine candidates. Then, five candidates -- two from California, two from Illinois and one from Idaho -- were selected to come to Routt County and interview for the position. One of the applicants pulled out of the interview process before the visit.

One was offered the job and did not take it. The remaining three applicants were not the right fit for YVRA, Sullivan said.

Routt County Commissioner Doug Monger said salary was a recurring issue.

Reviewing the previous applicants will save the county from having to advertise the position a second time, which Stahoviak said could be expensive. For the initial application period, the county advertised locally, in Denver and with the American Association of Airport Executives.

The interview committee is expected to meet this week to review the applications.

The interview committee is composed of nine people: Sullivan, Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp. President Chris Diamond, Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association Executive Vice President San--dy Evans Hall, Steamboat Springs City Manager Paul Hughes, City Councilwoman Kathy Connell, Routt County Commissioner Dan Ellison, Air--port Commission Chairman Marty Kolonel, Spectrum Jet Center Inc. owner Jane Harelik and Routt County Personnel Director Chris Hensen.

The county began looking for an airport manager after Aviation Director Jim Parker was asked to resign in March. Parker continued working until July 29. Ann Copeland is the airport's interim manager. The county hopes to have the position filled by September.
