Rescued man undergoes successful surgery

Charles Horton, the Steamboat Springs man who was rescued Monday after nine days stranded in the backcountry with a broken leg, underwent successful surgery Wednesday evening to repair his right knee. Horton remains in fair condition and was resting comfortably after the 2 1/2 hour operation, Yampa Valley Medical Center spokeswoman Christine McKelvie said. He also is being treated for hypothermia, dehydration and frostbite.

United Way celebrating Day of Caring on May 11

The Routt County United Way is celebrating its ninth annual Day of Caring during the morning May 11.
The Day of Caring is an opportunity for people of all ages, throughout Routt County, to participate in a variety of projects that help the elderly, disabled and disadvantaged. United Way matches nonprofit organizations and their clients with volunteers who may like to help with a project. Lunch will be provided and served by Ski Town Lions at noon at Olympian Hall for all volunteers.all 879-5605.

Emergency food being

distributed by LIFT-UP

Emergency food is being distributed through The Emergency Food Assistance Program at LIFT-UP of Routt County offices. Each eligible household can receive TEFAP foods once per quarter, and the distribution period for the second quarter began April 1 and ends June 30. Food will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Call 870-8804 from 1 to 5 p.m. weekdays for more information about income eligibility and hours of operation for the Steamboat Springs, Hayden and Oak Creek LIFT-UP offices.

Little League registration ends Saturday

Little League registration for all boys and girls ages 9 to 15 ends Saturday. Forms have been mailed to previously registered players and are available in school offices as well as the Parks and Recreation Department office.

Emerald City Opera holds auditions May 10 and 11

Emerald City Opera is holding auditions for this summer's opera production, The Merry Widow (sung in English) at 7 p.m. May 10 at the United Methodist Church in Steamboat Springs and at 7 p.m. May 11 in the Moffat County High School Choir Room.
