Ann Keating: Ban smoking now

Ask any students at Steamboat Springs Middle School and they can tell you that second-hand smoke endangers everyone exposed. Those same students can tell you that they understand the kind of protection that tobacco companies have regarding the law because of the multibillion dollar industry they are.

Tobacco companies have had their hands slapped for advertising to youth. What they inherently know is that if they can addict a teenager by age 19, there's a good chance they will addict them for life. Tobacco is the only legal product sold that causes mass addiction, disease and death when used as intended.

As a teacher, I encourage City Council to step up to this issue and take a strong stand on what is right for my students past, present, and future. These incredible children deserve a smoke-free Steamboat.
