Phone scam reported in Routt County
Routt County residents are urged to be aware of a phone scam reported Thursday. A caller identified himself or herself as working for a federal government and told a Stagecoach woman that she had been awarded an $8,000 federal grant. The caller then asked for the woman's bank account number so the grant money could be put into her account. The woman asked for the agency's phone number and identification number, both of which were not legitimate. The caller eventually hung up.
Routt County Sheriff John Warner warns residents to never give out bank numbers or credit card numbers by phone to anyone they don't know.
"It is just common sense," he said.
