Friday's opening round mat-ches at the Western Slope Tournament were the first matches away from home for the Steam-boat Springs girls tennis team.

The Sailors are in Grand Junction this weekend, along with several of the state's top teams, making it the first real test of the season for the young squad.

"Friday's matches were the first matches outdoors this season, and it showed," Steamboat coach John Aragon said. "They are adjusting fairly well."

The Sailors played on indoor clay courts through the first two weeks of the season. On Friday, they were on outdoor hard courts beneath sunny skies.

No Steamboat player or doubles team remains in the championship bracket, but nearly everyone remains alive in the consolations.

The No. 4 doubles team of Anya Salzgeber and Megan Gonio are the only ones eliminated from play. They will have an exhibition match today.

At No. 1 singles, Kelli Parnell won two matches and lost one to advance to the consolation finals. At No. 2 singles, Breanne Murray lost her first match of the year but came back to defeat a Denver East player, 8-1.

Lisa Floyd also lost her first match of the season at No. 3 singles, but she won her second match, 8-0, against a player from Arvada West.

Steamboat's No. 1 doubles team of Stacy Cavanagh and Molly Weiss also won two matches and lost one to advance to the consolation finals. The No. 2 doubles team of Adele Dombrowski and Kristin Toy lost their first match but won the second against league opponent Montrose.

The No. 3 doubles team of Brittany DeGroff and Rebecca Timmerman lost to Cherry Creek to open the tournament but defeated Dakota Ridge in the next round to advance.

The Western Slope Tournament has 17 teams involved this season, including the state's top teams from Cherry Creek, Cheyenne Mountain and Greeley West.
