Cadet Nissa Carlson, daughter of Eric and Rita Carlson of Steamboat Springs, has been named as company commander, one of the highest positions in the cadet chain of command at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y.

Carlson was named to the position based on her superior academic and military performance as a cadet.

As company commander for Company H, 2nd Regiment, Carlson is responsible for the training and administration of more than 100 cadets.

Carlson is a 2001 graduate of Steamboat Springs High School.

Bernard wins scholarship

Steamboat Springs resident and Lowell Whiteman School incoming freshman Ramsey Bernard has been named as the 2004-05 Steinberg Scholar. The award honors a Routt County student and is based on academic promise, community involvement and willingness to participate in the school community. Bernard has maintained a 4.0 GPA in every class and is a prominent athlete.
