Surgeon, professor offers revision surgery

Over a period of time, artificial knees and hips (called arthroplasties) can begin to wear out, just as their natural counterparts do. Steamboat Springs now has an orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in complex knee and hip problems and revision surgery for failed arthroplasties.

Jerome Wiedel, M.D., joined the Yampa Valley Medical Center medical staff and began providing surgery here in April. He also practices in Denver, where he is professor of orthopaedics at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.

Wiedel developed an interest in reconstructive joint surgery when total hip replacement was introduced in the U.S. during his residency training. He completed a year of fellowship training in adult reconstructive surgery in England in 1972, then joined the faculty at UCHSC and served as chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics for 14 years.

In addition to maintaining an active surgery schedule, he continues to teach residents in orthopaedic surgery. Wiedel is director of the University of Colorado Adult Joint Reconstructive Fellowship program that trains orthopaedic surgeons in the specialty of joint replacements.

Wiedel's outreach practice based at Orthopaedics of Steamboat Springs expands the broad spectrum of orthopaedic services available at YVMC. His capabilities are unique on the Western Slope of Colorado. YVMC expects that Wiedel's skills and reputation will draw patients from a wide geographic area.
