Weekend gets off to soggy start

Steamboat Springs — Heavy rain, cold weather and snow in the high country made for a soggy start to the Labor Day weekend.
Music fans were disappointed Saturday after one of the biggest events of the weekend -- a free Little Feat concert at the base of the Steamboat Ski Area -- was canceled as a result of the winter-like weather.
"What can you do? It's nature, but at least it's not Florida," said Steamboat Springs resident Todd Matheis, who ventured out from a Gondola Square restaurant to check on the status of the event.
He was among several people who said they were prepared to brave the wet and muddy conditions to hear the band.
Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association officials cancelled the event at 2:30 p.m. before opening act Doug Haywood or Little Feat took the stage. The concert will not be rescheduled.
"It was a bummer," said Chelsea's vendor Andy Benjamin as he and his father, Tony Benjamin, packed up their equipment.

Several businesses and city buildings were destroyed and others damaged when a man in an armored bulldozer went on a rampage June 4 through downtown Granby. The Granby Chamber of Commerce and Granby mayor Ted Long will be collecting donations for the relief fund during the Delbert McClinton concert scheduled for 2 p.m. today at the base of the Steamboat Ski Area. Crowds had just started to gather during a break in the rain when officials decided to nix the event, Tony Benjamin said.
With rains expected to move out today, officials did not anticipate facing the same situation for the Delbert McClinton show, scheduled for 2 p.m. today.
"We believe we'll be able to move forward for (today's) concert," said Sandy Evans Hall, executive vice president for the chamber.
Today's weather forecast calls for partly cloudy conditions with temperatures increasing to a high of about 62 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
In addition to food and beverage tents, there will be a booth where concert-goers can contribute to a relief fund to help repair damage and cover losses suffered during the bulldozer incident in Granby on June 4.
