Sailors volleyball opens with 5-set win

Behind 15 kills each from senior Tina Roberts and sophomore Katie Mills, the Steamboat Springs volleyball team opened the 2004 season with a five-set win against Greeley Central in Greeley.

Junior Tara King added eight kills for the Sailors, as well, Saturday.

Steamboat (1-0) defeated Greeley Central, 25-23, 15-25, 25-12, 18-25, 15-9, in the relatively new rally-scoring format.

Steamboat hosts Moffat County at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Steamboat Springs High School. It will serve as the Sailors' league opener. During the preseason, coach Wendy Hall said the Bulldogs would be an improved team this season.

Steamboat opened the season with a scrimmage with Moffat County and Meeker in Meeker on Aug. 28.

Meeker opened the 2004 season by defeating Moffat County in three sets Thursday.

Before the Steamboat and Moffat County varsity match, the freshmen will play at 4:30 p.m., and the junior varsity will play at 5:30 p.m. at the high school.
