Almost two dozen first-, second- and third-graders shuffled into Linda Stansbery's room early Monday morning, unknowingly becoming the district's first Montessori students.
Rick Garth: Garneau wrong
At the end of her Viewpoints letter on Aug. 29, Gail Garneau poses an excellent question: "If the City Council pro-airport majority of Paul Strong, Kathy Connell, Nancy Kramer and Loui Antonucci will not put this issue on this November ballot, why not?"
Routt County commissioners: County defends decision
At a public hearing on April 1, 2003, the commissioners made the decision to locate the new Justice Center adjacent to the Detention Facility. This decision was not made lightly and, at the time, was not a unanimous vote of the board. We received extensive public comment and had considerable debate as a board before making our decision. In addition to a variety of other issues, we did consider the letter you sent to us expressing your desire for us to maintain government facilities downtown by constructing the Justice Center at the Sixth and Oak streets location. Unfortunately, we felt that the reasons for constructing the facility outside of the downtown area outweighed the reasons for keeping it downtown.

Soundoff for Sept. 5
Step aside Steamboat has one of the most overbuilt hotel and motel industries in all of the resort areas. Here we have one of our city councilwomen who has a big stake in the lodging industry, going to vote Tuesday, I guess on this tax district to benefit the hotel industry. There are many other ways we could use tax money from the city. I think Kathy Connell has a real conflict of interest in this vote and should recuse herself from this vote.

Sailors' injuries hurt more than loss
High school football players are supposed to leave the field on the shoulders of their teammates -- or at least on a school bus. They are not supposed to leave in an ambulance, and so the only huddle the Steamboat Springs football team could muster after a tough 28-22 loss to Arvada on Saturday was a makeshift huddle around injured teammates Daniel Coloccia.

Sage grouse protection plan finalized
For decades, the Herolds have monitored the greater sage grouse population on their ranch near Yampa. The greatest numbers of the small, chicken-like birds were present in the 1940s and '50s. In 1985, when a harsh winter caused the bird population to drop drastically, Carl Herold and his wife, Rita, stopped letting people hunt them on their land.
