Oak Creek Oak Creek will end its first summer concert series Saturday, with the organizer declaring it a success and planning for next year.
The series, which featured three weekend concerts, was organized by Oak Creek resident Don Williams as a way to raise money for the South Routt Recreation Association.
SRRA was founded a few years ago to get grant money for Oak Creek's hockey rink and batting cages. With grant money in the coffers to build a roof on the rink, SRRA now has its sights on the creation of a teen center.
The concerts are free, and the bands are local. Funds are raised through the sale of beer and food.
"There is a real need in this community, especially in the winter, for a teen center," Williams said. "There is not a lot for teens to do if they can't drive. And my mission in life is to work with kids and help them see the possibilities."
Williams ran South Routt's alternative school last year before moving to the North Routt Charter School.
To get teens more involved in the concert series, Williams formed a band called "The Locals" made up of adults from the community and high school-age musicians.
The Locals includes drummer Cary Kamperschroer, Williams on keyboards, Soroco High School music teacher Kelly Turnipseed on bass, four vocalists -- Brenda Nardo, Amanda Wilson, Amanda Quinones and Toni Lomardi -- and Jessica Williams on guitar.
"The Locals got a great reception at the grand opening of Dinty Moore's last Saturday," Williams said. "And we've played for each of the concerts."
The Locals play oldies, "a lot of Beatles tunes" and a half-dozen originals. The group recently added some covers of AC/DC and Queen.
The Locals will play at Saturday's concert in Decker Park in a lineup with Slander, Brittany Rose and Inflight.
The concert begins at 2 p.m. and will last through the afternoon.
"We plan to continue this next year," Williams said. "As we make more money, we hope to bring in bigger bands. We hope to keep building this series."
