The Steamboat Springs boys soccer team ends its season today in the final home match for six seniors on the Sailors' squad.
Alec Nelson, Jordan Gray, Dillon Dennis, Kalen Caughey, Danny Carlson and Tyler Andrew will play their final high school game when Steamboat faces Battle Mountain at 4 p.m. at Dudley Field.
The Sailors (2-11-1 overall, 2-8-1 in the Western Slope League) will attempt to knock off the Huskies, one of the state's top teams in Class 4A. This year, Battle Mountain pulled away from the rest of the league en route to a 12-2 overall record and a 10-1 record in league play.
With two defeats of second-place Glenwood Springs during the season, Battle Mountain is assured of a first-place finish regardless of today's outcome.
Battle Mountain comes into today's game off a rare loss against Alexander Dawson. Steamboat lost to Glenwood, 5-2, on Saturday but played strong during the first half and had a 2-1 lead by halftime.
The last time the Sailors and Huskies met, Battle Mountain won, 6-0.
Steamboat is a young team this season and will return a majority of its players next season.
Battle Mountain, Glenwood Springs, Rifle and Moffat County already have locked up playoff spots and will represent the Western Slope.a
