Sailors head to regionals

Steamboat Springs runner Sam Tarrant knows that making it to the Colorado High School State Championships will not be easy, but he's not giving up hope.

"I think we have a good chance," Tarrant said. "I'm just hoping that I feel good (on that day) and can finish in the top 15."

Tarrant and his Steamboat Springs High School teammates will make their bid for a state berth Saturday at Confluence Park in Delta. The boys are scheduled to run at 10:30 a.m., and the girls will follow at 11:30 a.m. Delta also will host the 3A regional. The girls will run at 10 a.m., and the boys will run at 11 a.m.

"It's a pretty flat course," three-time state qualifier Jennifer Hooper said. "I tend to do well on flat courses."

Hooper, who is coming off a fourth-place finish last weekend in Palisade, said she is not planning on peaking at this weekend's regional. She will try to run well enough to qualify and save a something for the state meet.

The top four teams and top 15 individual runners will be asked to compete Oct. 30 at Vineyard Golf Course in Colorado Springs.

Steamboat Springs coach Glen Light is optimistic about his team's chances at the meet. He said the Sailors are familiar with all but three of the teams in the meet. He expects Battle Mountain and Moffat County to be the favorites in the boys and girls races. But he thinks that the Steamboat teams have a good chance of breaking into the top-four and extending the season..

Last weekend Hooper ran a time of 19 minutes, 45 seconds in Palisade to led the girls team. Sarah MacCarthy finished at 21:38, and Katie Conrath finished at 21:53.

Tarrant led the Steamboat boys with an 11th place finish in Palisade with a time of 17:42. Mike Gleason finished 18th with a time of 17:59 and Andy Garber came in 20th with a time of 18:06. Matt Hill finished at 18:11, Marty Smith finished at 18:31, and Kieran Corrigan finished at 18:32.

Light said Hill, Tarrant, Gleason, Garber, Corrigan, Smith and Justin Krause will represent the Steamboat boys team this weekend. Brett Denney will run as an alternate.

Hooper, MacCarthy, Madison Proper, Florie Van Baak, Conrath, Anna Anderson and Alyssa Walter will represent the girls team. Colleen Treanor will be the team's alternate.
