Pat McClelland: Amendment 37 will cost voters

Why is it that Coloradans are taking renewable energy to a vote this November through Amendment 37? Our state's power suppliers already give us that opportunity every month by offering green power programs, such as Xcel's Wind Source and Wind Energy through Yampa Valley Electric Association Inc.

Participation in these programs by "green" Coloradans are increasing and the market mechanisms for power supply are beginning to work as Colorado's utilities continue to add more. Yet, some in Colorado now want to mandate which renewable energy sources are advanced instead of allowing the market to make that determination.

I support green power by paying a small premium every month to YVEA's green power program and you can, too. There are many green power programs available to consumers. These programs have made great strides over the last several years and continue to improve without costing a significant amount of money and limiting consumer choice.

I urge you to vote "no" on Amendment 37 -- a measure that has too many questions and will only cost us more in the long run.
