The Grand Valley volleyball team defeated Hayden in three games Friday night in Hayden.
The Cardinals won, 26-24, 27-25, 25-21, making fewer mistakes on serve and at the net, especially near the end of the first two games, to prevail.
Grand Valley was in control for most of the first game. Hayden held the lead twice: once at the very beginning and again toward the end. The Tigers had game point, 24-22, after senior Jamie Waugh caught the Cardinals off guard with a soft, underhand serve they couldn't handle.
But Grand Valley fought back with three straight points to take the lead for good, 25-24, and went on to win the game by two.
The Cardinals appeared as if they easily would win Game 2, taking a 16-11 lead after a series of Tigers mistakes, but a missed serve from Grand Valley's Megan Johnson helped start a Hayden comeback. The Tigers scored six straight behind two kills from senior Hannah Williams and an ace from junior Chelsea Fry.
A kill from Hayden junior Mariah Doolin tied the game, 24-24. After a missed serve from Hayden and another missed serve from Grand Valley, Julianne Jones stepped up for the Cardinals and got a kill. Teammate Mikayla Clark ended the game on the next point.
Hayden jumped out to a quick 7-4 lead in Game 3, but a sequence of Tigers errors helped the Cardinals tie it up. Jones served five straight points for Grand Valley. Hayden made a charge toward the end, but Grand Valley prevailed in three.
