Oak Creek resident Derek J. Torres passed away Nov. 15, 2004. He was 29.
Derek was born Sept. 27, 1975, in Pineville, La., to Danny Torres and Angelique Doherty. He later moved to Elizabeth, where he attended Elizabeth High School. After graduation he began a career in carpentry. He moved to Yampa in 1998 to continue to pursue that career.
Derek was an avid Denver Broncos fan who never missed a game. He also enjoyed NASCAR auto racing, playing Xbox with his friends, fishing with his family and spending time with loved ones. He especially enjoyed being with his beautiful daughter, Mackenzie Dawn, who filled his life with love and joy. Derek also loved snowboarding and was loved by everyone who came into contact with him.
Derek is survived by his loving partner, Melissa Smith; his daughter, Mackenzie Dawn; his mother, Angelique Doherty; his stepfather, Marvin Doherty; a brother, Roger "Duke" VanDeel; his father, Danny Torres and his wife Shelly; his grandparents, Buddy and Barbara Sellers; a grandmother, Hattie Johnson; a stepbrother, Vaughn Doherty; a stepsister, Kimberly Reeves; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
A funeral was held Nov. 19, 2004, at Yampa Bible Church in Yampa.
