SSWSC looking for volunteers

The Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club is holding a seminar for volunteers and officials interested in helping with the local slate of ski jumping and Nordic combined events scheduled this winter.

The seminar will look at every aspect of holding an event, said Todd Wilson, the Winter Sports Club's Nordic combined director. The seminar is at 7 p.m. today at Olympian Hall at the base of Howelsen Hill.

"It's an overview of the different positions we need to put on a competition," Wilson said. "Basically, our staff is not big enough to fill all these positions."

For the smaller events, Winter Sports Club staff and its athletes' parents frequently serve as volunteers, but for larger events such as the Nordic combined World Cup B event in early December and the national championships in March, the Winter Sports Club turns to the community for help.

Four national officials will be leading tonight's seminar, including Reed Zuehlke, a two-time Olympian and director of special jumping/Nordic combined officials in the United States.

Glen Jones, Mike Symalla and Keith Zuehlke also will be in attendance. Jones and Symalla are International Ski Federation officials.

"The bottom line with this seminar is that we are offering a chance to help educate our volunteers so that they can see all that goes into it, and have a better understanding of event production," Wilson said. "So they can have a chance to decide what area they may like to work in."

Volunteers are needed on the organizing committee, which handles logistics related to the competition. Volunteers also are needed for the competition committee, which handles matters related to the event, such as starters and distance measurers.

The seminar is open to everyone in the community, not just members of the Winter Sports Club.
