With four indoor and six outdoor hydrocourt clay tennis courts, four outdoor hard courts and a nationally recognized professional staff, the Tennis Center at Steamboat Springs is Northwest Colorado's premier tennis facility.
In fact, president Jim Swiggart said the Tennis Center is the premier indoor and outdoor clay and hard court facility in North America, a notion backed by comments frequently heard from users.
"We hear two comments," Swiggart said. "The first is, 'If I'd known this was here I'd have brought my racquet.' The second thing we hear is that, 'This is remarkable for a public facility.' We hear that over and over and over again."
Lodging tax dollars helped build the Tennis Center, and since the facility's opening in 1991, it has given roughly $3 million in tax dollars back to the city.
"We have a real strong tennis community," Swiggart said.
Many communities in Northwest Colorado have city courts or private courts at hotels or resort areas, but The Tennis Center is the only large-scale public facility available for use.
Anyone looking to book courts in the summer is advised to reserve his or her party's courts seven days in advance. If anyone is interested in booking a major event or a business outing he or she can make reservations three months in advance, Swiggart said.
Summer court fees for non-residents are $28 per hour for non prime times and $38 for prime time slots. It is important to note that the fees are per hour, not per player. In other words, a foursome that reserves a court in a non prime-time slot will pay $7 per person once they divide up the fee.
In addition, The Tennis Center has top of the line "demo" racquets and other rental racquets available at the Pro Shop for a $5 or $3 fee, respectively.
Tennis is a popular sport year-round in Steamboat, thanks to the bubble placed above four clay courts. Summer brings out both local players and those from throughout the country.
Located near the base of the Steamboat Ski Area, the Tennis Center hosts multiple summer tournaments, including three U.S. Tennis Association-sanctioned events.
In addition, the Tennis Center hosts the Ore House Singles and Doubles Championships on Aug. 6-8, which helps raise money for the junior tennis program in Steamboat Springs.
