Sixth-grader wins poster contest

A lifetime of ski jumping, ski racing, snowboarding and plain old skiing around the Steamboat Ski Area gave Devin Wilkinson, 12, the creative edge in this year's national Kids' Safety Poster contest. Her poster won "Most Creative" in a contest sponsored by the National Ski Area Association. It will be featured in the October 2004 issue of Ski Magazine.

The contest was part of the National Ski Area Association's "Heads Up" safety campaign. Elementary school students were asked to illustrate any one of the seven points of the "Your Responsibility Code," a list of slope safety rules used at United States ski resorts, including the Steamboat Ski Area. Locally, the program is coordinated by Steamboat Ski Patrol member Michelle Baxter, with a mission to promote safe, fun skiing and riding.

Two contest winners were selected, including overall safety message and most creative design. The children's designs were judged on their connection to safety, visual impact and originality.

Wilkinson, a sixth-grader at Strawberry Park Middle School who has been skiing since she was 2 years old, will receive an OVO helmet and backpack, in addition to publication of her poster. Her illustration was selected from 331 posters that came from ski areas in 17 states.
