Steamboat Springs A 19-year-old Steamboat Springs man was charged Wednesday in Routt County Court with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.
Robert Jacob Wright was arrested early Wednesday morning on suspicion of possessing 36 grams of marijuana worth $350. Later that afternoon, the District Attorney's Office charged him on one count of possessing marijuana with the intent to distribute, a felony.
At about midnight Tuesday, Steamboat Springs police officers saw a black coupe parked in the opposite direction of traffic in front of the Wells Fargo Bank, Assistant Police Chief Art Fiebing said.
The police officers approached the vehicle and, while talking to the occupants, detected a strong odor of fresh, unsmoked marijuana and noticed the occupants had blood-shot and glassy eyes, Fiebing said.
During questioning, Wright admitted he had smoked marijuana earlier that day, had marijuana in his backpack and sold marijuana as recently as a week ago. Officers found four plastic bags of marijuana inside a shopping bag in the backpack, Fiebing said. The police officers also found a glass pipe with marijuana residue.
According to a police report, Wright said he had not paid for the marijuana yet and was buying it to use with his roommates, who would then reimburse him.
Also in Routt County Court on Wednesday, an 18-year-old Craig man appeared on theft and trespass charges. Gail Morrison, public defender for Daniel Esteban Duarte, said her client had worked out a plea agreement with the DA's Office. She asked that the case be bound over to District Court to be heard June 11.
On April 28, Duarte was arrested after confessing to his involvement with a series of car break-ins.
