Store offers antique, unique

New business carries home furnishings and collectibles

People who want to furnish their homes on a budget -- or find rare Perry Como records and antique tea sets -- now have a place to go in Hayden.

Vicki Morgan has a little of everything in her new store, Affordable Furnishings and Collectibles, at 144 S. Walnut St. The store has been open almost three weeks and has had a good reception, Morgan said.

Morgan has collected knickknacks from all periods of the 20th century -- vintage record players, jewelry boxes, fine china, bottles, artwork and toys, plus a wide variety of furniture, including hutches, dressers, beds, tables and chairs.

As a bargain-finder at flea markets and more recently on e-Bay, Morgan has bought and resold her findings for years. Moving from Lakewood, Wash., to Hayden, she moved her business with her.

"I love this stuff," Morgan said. "It's got so much history, but it was overrunning my house."

Morgan, who grew up in Rifle, moved to Colorado to be closer to her family. Before choosing to open her business in Hayden, she checked Rifle, Craig and Vernal, Utah. While helping in her search for a new home, Morgan's parents stumbled upon the old Walnut Street building, where last year's successful craft bazaar was held.

"I told them, 'I don't know,'" Morgan said. "Twenty years ago, Hayden was nothing."

Morgan was pleasantly surprised when she saw it again recently. She moved into town with her two daughters, who are in the fifth and eighth grades.

Affordable Furnishings and Collectibles is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday through Friday. Call 276-1710.
